Before becoming an artist, I was an ambitious corporate lawyer, working as a senior associate at a top international law firm in New York city. But by 2005, my love of art had surpassed my legal ambitions and I was compelled to abandon my legal practice. During those years when I practiced law, my rare days off from work were spent in the museums and galleries, wandering through the large, light-filled rooms. There, I would be surrounded by a surge of humanity and be free to wonder, dream, feel. I fantasized about taking the paintings home, surrounding myself with their intimate expressions, finding a way to live in their painted worlds. Somewhere inside me were voices wanting to commune with the images that lay before me. I felt them speak to me but at that time, I had no way of answering. When two planes hit the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, I knew my life had to change. Although my life as a lawyer is now behind me, the sanctuary I sought from art during that time remains the driving force in my work today. My art practice is supported by my belief that art has the power to transform meaning through the experience of beauty and pleasure. Practicing in a range of media, I now seek to engage with the creators of our diverse visual culture, both past and present, and to represent the sensitivity and sensuality that lies at the heart of the human experience. |
